A/W 14 Trends: Swinging 60's

R handpicks the A/W 14 trends that are worth investing in

As we begin to think about making a few key purchases for the new season I thought it wise to revisit the shows of A/W 14 and make sure we're spending our pennies wisely.

While you may be tempted by a piece of Cara-kissed Mulberry hardware, I recommend thinking more along the lines of a long term investment. As such I have selected a few key trends that I think will spark iconic designs - which, when invested in, will become pieces you can re-work season after season.

First up we saw A/W 14 declare the return of the swinging sixties.

Miu Miu

Classic shapes of the 60's are remade with Miuccia's signature charm and wit and transform into playful pieces that liven your look. Quilted nylon, lurex, and every transparent fabric under the sun was crafted into casual attire for the young at heart.

Key Pieces:

Pointed courts
Rainbow bright mac
Bright shoulder bag

Harking back to the dapper men of the 60's, Gucci kicked off Milan Fashion Week with more than a nod to the swinging era. Get ready to go ape as you revisit graphic prints and luxe textures - but this time, take a tip from the boys and opt for sharp silhouettes and dramatic volume.

Key Picks:

Faux Fur accessories
A-Line leather skirt
Collared pastel coat

Alexander Wang

The fashion pack were dragged to Brooklyn and my-oh-my was it worth it. Alexander Wang managed to be both forward facing and retro-inspired and pulled it all off with flashes of neons and all of the pockets.

Key Pieces:

Black boots
Boxy patterned jacket
Neon accessories

Keep it vaguely messy and unkempt and mimic Frida Giannini endorsed pastel hues on your lips, cheeks and eyes.
