A shares her love for ugly sandals and a few tips on how to style them.Summer footwear is oft a matter of some controversy and the continuing trend for ugly sandals is not making things any easier. Being, at heart, a trainers and Dr Martens girl, ugly sandals are my go-to summer option, but for all you who would naturally veer toward a ballet flat or a heeled boot, I understand this is daunting territory.
Let me be your guide as we confidently stomp though the jungle of chunky footwear. To arm you in your fight against footwear fails this summer, here are some foolproof solutions of just how to wear your ugly sandals.
The smart girl's choice
Totally workwear and weekend appropriate, these platform sliders from Whistles might well just be the 'it' shoe of the summer. Treat the metallic like a neutral and pair them with pretty much anything from your wardrobe. Why not exploit the seasonal tendency toward stripes with these lovely silk trousers from By Malene Birger and this very cool M&S sleeveless shirt and hey presto, summer smart is sorted!
Girlyness rating on this is pretty high actually, despite that chunky platform, it is still a very feminine metallic silver shoe, great for an ugly sandal virgin!
Just think of it as a sporty flip flop
Under the direction of Mr Stella McCartney aka Alasdhair Willis, Hunter has become the British Heritage brand of the moment, and these signature sliders are an absolute summer gem. Sliders are the perfect summer footwear for urbanites, being about as close to a pair of trainers as sandals can get. Throw them on with a pair of joggers or shorts, and pair with equally cool sportswear pieces like this Topshop x adidas Originals sweatshirt and a tropical flowerpot hat from M&S.
These are pretty low on the girlyness rating, but imagining they're like a sports chic flip flop may help?
We've all worn them
Let your inner bohemian loose this summer with a pair of basic Birkenstock, yep - the hippie staple is having another moment in the sun. French Connection have made this folklore dress just for you, and any summer parties or weddings you have lined up. To balance out all that girlyness, tough it up with a suede, fringed waistcoat from Topshop.
Birkenstocks are your classic ugly sandal, and as such, are a very good place to start. They also come in a huge variety of colours, so definitely something to suit your taste.
The ultimate ugly sandal
I have been drooling in shop windows over these Dr Martens sandals for weeks now. If, like me, you usually wear your Docs right into the summer months, these will be your saviour! Wear them with holes in your jeans for summer casual or classic sports socks from Uniqlo and this Moschino t-shirt for some normcore irony.
There's no getting around these babies; they are ugly. Only for the ugly sandal devotee and the brave.
